Galileo laid the foundations for experimental physics. His contributions include:
- The period of a pendulum does not depend on the mass of the weight suspended from it, which formed the basis for the development of accurate pendulum clocks. The pendulum with which he made this discovery can still be seen in Pisa Cathedral.
- Foundations of Newton’s later dynamics: the acceleration of falling objects does not depend on their mass. The velocity of an object remains constant if no force acts upon it.
- An early attempt to measure the speed of light, but the method failed.
- The law of inertia.
- The principle of relativity in the field of classical mechanics.
- The Galilean thermometer.
- Galileo’s compass: the proportional compass.
Mathematics
